Literacy

Literacy education comes in many forms. We write, read, speak, and listen in many different languages, dialects, and styles. I encourage all children to read for at least 20 minutes per night to strengthen their literacy skills.

Numeracy

Both communication and problem solving are critical skills in mathematical processing. Students are encouraged to work cooperatively to explore a variety of strategies to solve real-world problems.

Brain-Based Education

To provide the greatest learning opportunities, 3 domains should be considered: cognitive (knowledge/intellect), affective (feelings/responses), and psychomotor (physical reactions/coordination).

Outdoor Education

The outside world provides us with endless opportunities to ask questions, test theories, and solidify our understandings. Students are expected to be prepared for as much time outdoors as we can manage on a regular basis. We will start each day with a walk in the community, and will take advantage of the hours we have with the sunlight.

Early Learning Framework

Part of my learning ahead of this teaching journey was as a participant in the Early Learning Framework (ELF) Community of Practice. I met with a number of incredible educators who engaged in ongoing, open communication about the intricacies of working with young learners. Conversations were focused on play-based learning, sense of belonging, identity, mastery of skills, and communication, among many others. You can find more information, including the downloadable ELF here.
